Introduction.
It is with great pleasure we introduce you to USB student athlete, Archie Cook.
USB Consultant, Alan Murdoch, has had the pleasure of working with Archie since he became a student at Merchiston Castle School in 2019. He made an immediate impression both in the classroom and out on the practice ground.
What a journey he has had to date and still two more years before hopefully heading to the USA to continue in his education and golfing aspirations.
Archie is a passionate, energetic, driven and humble young man. These qualities are all noticeable when he trains and plays, he is well versed, well travelled and a very confident young man. Archie is a team player, a Captain and a leader in everything he does.
Recently, Scotland Golf made him Captain of the Scotland U16 Quads Team for there trip to the Netherlands. This just shows how highly regarded this young man is.

Interview.
How would you describe yourself?
I am very energetic and have a bubbly character. I would say, and would be said of me, that I am more a leader than a follower. I love being around my friends at boarding school and when home with my family and friends local to where I live.
What age did you start playing golf and why?
I started playing golf when I was 4 just a knock about with my dad. He was the main reason why I got into the game.
How would you say you have developed as a golfer over the past few years?
I started being coached by Alan Murdoch Director of Golf at MERCHISTON CASTLE SCHOOL in Autumn 2020 – present. My handicap has reduced from 7 to +1 in that time, and every attribute of my game has improved. But also my mental approach to the game and course management has also developed and matured in this time, improving my resilience in competition play and in-turn my results. Over the winter months I really worked on honing my short game which produced good results for me in our recent matches in Holland playing as Scottish under 16 Captain.
Who is your favourite golfer and why?
Rory McIlroy – I love his style, and his ball striking and length off the tee, but also his popularity with the fans, and as a global ambassador for the game.
What do you intend to study and why?
I would like to go on to study Law or Economics, my career goal is to be a Barrister.
I like the idea of the thought provoking nature of a career in law, and also the debating nature of potential court career.
Other than golf what else do you enjoy doing and why?
I love to play tennis in my down time, both at school and at home, when not at school we play regularly with local friends and families. I still train once a week with my school cricket team and play the occasional match. I thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie element that team sport brings and being able to compete for a team gives me a great sense of belonging and pride for one another. I also still love watching rugby, although I don’t play anymore in order to concentrate on my golf.
